Yahoo! Publisher Network to Go Down by April 30 2010!!!

Filed under: Featured, Google, Technology News

We just received an anonymous user from someone who claims to have received an email from Yahoo which says that the company’s Google AdSense counterpart, Publisher Network, will be shut down by the company in the next 30 days. There’s some chatter about it on Twitter as well, so this looks like it’s coming from a credible source.

Apparently, publishers are being pushed to Chitika instead, which has set up this section on its website to “make the transition from Yahoo! Publisher Network as easy as possible”.

Update: it’s legit, alright. Here’s the full email:

Dear Publisher,

Yahoo! continuously evaluates and prioritizes our products and services, in alignment with business goals and our continued commitment to deliver the best consumer and advertiser experiences. After conducting an extensive review of the Yahoo! Publisher Network beta program, we have decided to close the program effective April 30, 2010. We expect to deliver final publisher payments for the month ending April 30, 2010 to publishers no later than May 31, 2010. All publishers eligible for 1099s for the 2010 tax year will have those mailed by January 31, 2011.

Because our content will no longer be delivered to your ad unit spaces after April 30, 2010, we recommend removing all YPN ad code from your pages by that date.

For the opportunity to continue earning revenue, we suggest using Chitika, a leading advertising network that syndicates Yahoo! Content Match and Sponsored Search ads. Chitika has set up a special process for YPNO beta publishers to participate in its platform. Click here for more information.

We thank you for your participation in the Yahoo! Publisher Network beta. If you have any questions regarding this announcement, please contact our Support Team at (866) 785-2636, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PDT.

Sincerely,

Your Partners at Yahoo!

The YPN blog remains silent about the axing, so far. We have e-mails in with both Chitika and Yahoo for more information.

One thing I’m trying to figure out is why Yahoo doesn’t refer publishers to its search partner Microsoft, who operates adCenter.

For background: the Yahoo! Publisher Network (aka YPN) was launched in August 2005. It provides registered publisher with cost-per-click contextual advertising as well as various tools and services to assist them in building and improving their websites.

“We can make him better than he was before.  Better, stronger, faster.” — The Six Million Dollar Man

On December 28, 2009, we decided to ring in the new year a little early with the launch of the new LinkedIn for iPhone v3.0 application.  Since that time, we’ve seen tremendous excitement and enthusiasm around the new application.  In fact, in the short time since the launch, we’ve seen the number of active users of the application triple.

I’m happy to report that, as of yesterday, Apple has approved the new LinkedIn for iPhone v3.1 for availability in the iTunes App Store.

Download: LinkedIn for iPhone v3.1

Feature Enhancements

We’ve received a lot of feedback from users in the past few months, and we’re hard at work on a large number of improvements.  For this release, we chose to focus primarily on making the application faster and more stable for people with large networks.

The most significant enhancements surround the new Favorites feature that we launched with v3.0 of the application.  We’ve now made it easier than ever to go through your connections, and quickly mark which of your connections are Favorites.

Bulk Add Favorites in v3.1

Once you add your favorites, you now have a quick list of contacts that you can go to when you need to send a quick message or look up information before a meeting.  In addition, you can filter your Network Updates to show only updates from your Favorites.   Managing the list is as easily as a simple swipe of your finger.

Delete Favorites

Over a dozen small feature enhancements made it into this version, including a lot of the little things that our users requested.  For example, it’s now possible to set your status directly from your profile page.

LinkedIn Mobile: 2010

2010 is a big year for LinkedIn mobile.  If you are one of our LinkedIn for iPhone users, please join the conversation in the LinkedIn for iPhone group.  We’re very excited to hear from you and hear suggestions for new features and improvements.

Facebook obtain registered trademarks in the United States for “Developer Garage” Trademark

Facebook has lately been ramping up efforts to obtain registered trademarks in the United States and other countries and regions for a number of products and services it offers or intends to offer in the future.

facebook

Fresh off the heels of applying for a trademark for Credits, its virtual payment system, the company is now attempting to gain exclusive rights to the use of the term “Facebook Developer Garage”.

In case you’re not aware, Facebook Developer Garage events are developer get-togethers hosted all over the world, which are being described as “a place to explore, get gritty, tinker, experiment, and test out ideas for Facebook Platform”.

Interestingly, Facebook filed for a trademark in three separate classes, only one of them including “sponsoring and organizing online and live exhibitions and events in the field of software development”. I’m not sure if that means Facebook intends to use the term ‘Developer Garage’ for more endeavors in the future or if they’re simply covering all their bases, but here are the descriptions of the two other classes the company applied a trademark for:

International Class 009: Computer software development tools; computer software for use as an application programming interface (API); application programming interface (API) for computer software which facilitates online services for social networking, building social networking applications and for allowing data retrieval, upload, download, access and management; computer software to enable uploading, downloading, accessing, posting, displaying, tagging, blogging, streaming, linking, sharing or otherwise providing electronic media or information via computer and communication networks.

International Class 042: Computer services, namely, creating virtual communities for registered users to organize groups and events, participate in discussions, and engage in social, business and community networking; computer services, namely, hosting electronic facilities for others for organizing and conducting meetings, events and interactive discussions via communication networks; application service provider (ASP) featuring software to enable or facilitate the uploading, downloading, streaming, posting, displaying, blogging, linking, sharing or otherwise providing electronic media or information over communication networks; providing an online network service that enables users to transfer personal identity data to and share personal identify data with and among multiple websites; providing information from searchable indexes and databases of information, including text, electronic documents, databases, graphics and audio visual information, on computer and communication networks; providing temporary use of non-downloadable software applications for social networking, creating a virtual community, and transmission of audio, video, photographic images, text, graphics and data; computer services in the nature of customized web pages featuring user-defined or specified information, personal profiles, audio, video, photographic images, text, graphics and data.

Trademark applications for ‘Facebook Developer Garage’ were filed in the U.S. on the 24th of March, and in Europe on the 29th of March.

eBay To Sell Goods Through Mobile Devices In 2010

This morning, eBay introduced two new iPhone applications, designed to make sellers’ lives easier when it comes to listing items on the giant online marketplace from their Apple phones. The ecommerce juggernaut also casually mentioned that it is on pace to reach a whopping $1.5 billion worth of goods sold via mobile phones in 2010 – more than double the mobile GMV (gross merchandise value) it registered in 2009 ($600 million).

The company claims its primary iPhone app, which is available in more than 190 countries and eight languages, has been downloaded 8 million times to date, and that 1 item is purchased using eBay mobile every 2 seconds. Also, eBay disclosed that it will have an iPad version of the eBay app ready at launch day (April 3).

One of the two iPhone apps being launched today is for the eBay.com global marketplace (iTunes link), while the other is for eBay’s new classifieds site, eBayClassifieds.com (iTunes link).

With the apps, sellers can quickly take a picture of an item, list it in eBay’s auction format free of charge and share listings on Facebook or Twitter.

Registered buyers, in turn, can easily purchase items via the mobile apps, particularly when using the PayPal Mobile app for iPhone, which allows users to quickly email money or “bump” iPhones with a seller to transfer funds between PayPal accounts.

Here are video demos of the two iPhone apps:

More Improved chat for iGoogle and orkut

Have you ever wanted to quickly send a file to a friend who’s online? Now you can share pictures, documents and other files directly with your friends while chatting in iGoogle and orkut, without having to switch to email to send the file as an attachment. File transfer works directly in the browser so you don’t need to install anything. Just start a conversation with a friend and click “Send a file…” in the “Actions” menu. After you select a file, your friend will be asked if they want to accept the transfer. You can learn more on the Google Talkabout Blog.

You might have noticed that we recently gave iGoogle and orkut chat a face lift. Several tools now have a new home at the top of the chat window. From the new toolbar, you can click the blue camera and phone icons to start video and voice chats with your friends or the group chat icon to add additional friends to a text chat. If you’ve never used video or voice chat before, all you need is a webcam and microphone attached to your computer and a small plugin application available for free at www.google.com/chat/video.

We’re working to bring file transfer and the new toolbar to Gmail too. In the meantime, you can continue to access voice, video and group chat in Gmail from the “Video and More” menu in a chat window.

Oracle – Sun Tech Days Hyderabad 2010 Day1 Key note

Tech Days 2010 – Day 01

As you walk into the HICC convention center at Hyderabad, where the Tech Days 2010 is hosted, you will greeted by folks sitting in different stalls including a Technology Book stall that offers a 25 % discount on all books, a stall for Education where enquiries around Training & Certification are handled and also a stall dedicated for StarOffice/OpenOffice.Org.

On a stage that reflected only bright red colour from one end to the other, Ravichandra Kulur displayed his extraordinary skill in playing the Flute quite effortlessly. It was mind blowing.

It was followed by a demonstration around a new feature in VirtualBox called teleporting and then about a really cool drawing tool developed using JavaFX.

Krishan Dhawan, Managing Director of Oracle India addressed the crowd after this. He Assured that Java and Mysql Will continue going, its part of their investments which also will keep going.

As James Gosling walked on to the stage, thousands of Tech Days Delegates gathered in there gave him a very warm reception. He covered quite a few things in his keynote, starting with the staggering statistics about 10 billion-ish Java Enabled Devices, a number more than the human population on earth(!), jdk 7, Java EE 6, Glassfish v3, Netbeans 6.8, Java Card 3, JavaFX.

Among several interesting things that James Gosling spoke on day 01 of Tech Days 2010 at Hyderabad, a few things that stand out in his keynote is his reference to Java being used in all Universities across the globe as part of undergraduate courses and how students could just “Learn (it) Once and Work Anywhere,” his mentioning of blogs by Mark Reinholds and John Rose to pick up new knowledge on Java technology, his excitement about the auto deployment feature of Glassfish v3 that enables a developer to modify his/her code on the fly without wasting any time and finally about his thoughts on multi-threaded programming and its significance a few years into the future (say 2030), where one might see processors that may have more than 5000 cores(!!!), courtesy Moore’s law.

What interested me personally was the software that James was using to run through his presentation. Though he was using an Apple laptop, I was sure he was neither using a keynote or an OpenOffice.Org. He revealed to us at one point of time during his presentation that he was using an application that he developed using JavaFX to run through his slides!!! That was kind of cool.

Several break out sessions (a.k.a tracks) on different technologies occurred at different locations within the venue and it all appeared to be well-received by the delegates. And after all that, we had some entertainment session in the late evening, something that’s unchanged on the Tech Days agenda for several years now.

A good day 01 at Tech Days 2010

Configuration Differences in MySQL 5.4 from MySQL 5.1

There are Several variables and options are new or changed in MySQL 5.4 to provide more flexible runtime configuration, and better “out of box” configuration of default values for MySQL operation on up to 16-way x86 servers and 64-way CMT servers with 4GB or more memory.

Note

The changes to InnoDB configuration values may cause issues if you upgrade to MySQL 5.4 from an older version or MySQL, or if you upgrade from MySQL 5.4.0 through 5.4.2 to 5.4.3 or higher. See Section 2.12.1.1, “Upgrading from MySQL 5.1 to 5.4”.

These system variables are new:

More information about the new system variables can be found in the InnoDB Plugin Manual at http://www.innodb.com/products/innodb_plugin/plugin-documentation.

The default or minimum value of these existing system variables has changed:

These system variables have been made dynamic and can be modified at runtime:

This status variable is new:

This server option is new:

  • --super-large-pages: Boolean option. Large page support is enhanced for recent SPARC platforms. Standard use of large pages in MySQL attempts to use the largest size supported, up to 4MB. Under Solaris, a “super large pages” feature enables uses of pages up to 256MB. This feature can be enabled or disabled by using the --super-large-pages or --skip-super-large-pages option.
